This morning Google announced that Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) is now deprecated and will be removed on the 11th April 2019. It will be replaced by a more powerful and useful push notification SDK, Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). Check it out!
We, at Mawla, have been advising our clients to upgrade from GCM to FCM for months now as we already envisaged this announcement.
So what does this mean to you if you use GCM in your current applications? Well.. you have a year to get your ducks in order and switch over to FCM but we wouldn’t advise to wait that long. Some of you may remember, many moons ago, a very popular service named parse.com, had a similar announcement and sent an email to all their users that it would be pulling their service in a years time. Many companies fell into the trap of leaving the migration to a different service on the long finger. When the deadline finally arrived a lot of applications in the play and app store ceased to work causing a lot of lost users and bucks.
Fear not though everyone! Migrating to a different backend service other than parse.com is a lot more complicated than migrating from GCM to FCM. With a small amount of refactoring, switching to FCM notifications can be done in no time at all and you will also reap the rewards of all the other Firebase services such as analytics, realtime in app crash analytics and many more.
Why not get in touch with us, we’ll be happy to help.. but remember not to leave it too late or you’ll be sorry!!
